Kernel
Kernel is bryan johnson’s neurotechnology company focused on measuring brain activity / building non-invasive brain-interface technology. Johnson’s own site frames Kernel as the next measurement frontier after DNA/genome cost collapse: “What we measure, we improve.”
Thesis
Kernel’s thesis is that the brain and mind are under-measured relative to other biological systems. The Chicago Booth profile quotes Johnson arguing that if humans could really measure brain activity, it could be a historical turning point for cognitive evolution. It connects the company to Johnson’s depression history, family experiences with addiction/Alzheimer’s, and a broader ambition to improve cognition and harmony between people.
Relationship to Blueprint
Kernel and blueprint protocol share the same deep pattern: measure a system that is currently opaque, use the measurements to guide intervention, and build technology/community around improved feedback loops. Johnson’s 2020 “I fired myself” essay explicitly gestures toward the absence of an “Activity Monitor” for the brain and adds: “As Kernel CEO… Yet. We don’t have the numbers. Yet.”
